People have been displaced from six apartments as the result of a structure fire in the 1800 block of West 26th Street.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical personnel were dispatched to the fire at 1821 W. 26th St. just after 2:45 a.m. Wednesday, according to a news release. Passersby reported that a porch was on fire and flames were visible from Iowa Street.

LDCFM crews arrived and found heavy smoke and fire, with flames extending from the first floor to the third floor, according to the release.

“Some residents required additional assistance from crews to complete the evacuation process,” McKenzie Ezell, interim chief of staff for LDCFM, said via email.

Altogether, 27 firefighters responded.

“Residents of six apartment units were displaced by the fire and are being assisted by the Red Cross,” according to the release. “The remainder of the residents that were evacuated were able to return to their apartments.”

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire was under investigation as of Wednesday morning.

“LDCFM would like to remind residents to ensure that all smoke detectors are in working condition and to practice home fire safety,” according to the release. “Early detection and preparedness can make a critical difference in fire emergencies.”
